How to Calculate Cross Stitch Fabric Size
To calculate cross stitch fabric size, divide your stitch count by your fabric count, multiply by how many squares/threads you’re stitching over, then add fabric allowance on all sides.
This ensures your finished design fits comfortably on your fabric with enough extra space for framing or finishing.
Basic formula:
Fabric Width = (Stitches Wide × Threads Over ÷ Fabric Count) + Fabric Allowance
Fabric Height = (Stitches High × Threads Over ÷ Fabric Count) + Fabric Allowance
Tip: Don’t forget fabric allowance is added to both sides of your fabric.
What Does Stitching "Over 1" or "Over 2" Mean?
Stitching over 2 means you're working each cross stitch over 2 squares instead of 1. This is most common when stitching on linens and evenweave. When stitching on Aida, it is most common to stitch over 1 square.

Because each stitch covers more or less fabric depending on the number of squares you're stitching over it's important to account for when calculating fabric size. For example, stitching over 2 on 32 count linen would be the equivalent size of stitching over 1 on 16 count Aida.

How Much Extra Fabric Do I Need?
Most stitchers add 2–4 inches of fabric on each side of their design. This extra space (called fabric allowance) gives you room for:
-
Framing
-
Finishing (like pillows or ornaments)
-
Hooping or Q-snaps
If you’re planning more complex finishing, you may want to allow even more space.
